Bookieboo Recommends // books about illness & dying

The next blog in my "Bookieboo Recommends" series focuses on a topic that can be especially challenging for parents to explain to children in a sensitive and age-appropriate way (and one that I get a lot of recommendation requests for) - illness and dying. While dying is an inevitable part of life, being armed with the right books can help make the process a little easier.

Is it Time to Diversify Your Bookshelf?

Is it Time to Diversify Your Bookshelf?

Children who see their own worldview reflected in their books gain self-confidence, and when they see experiences that differ from their own, they develop curiosity and empathy.

Can You Recommend a Book About...Toilet Training?

Can You Recommend a Book About...Toilet Training?

Toilet training is a pretty big milestone, and one that can be a bit tricky (for mum and bub alike!). A great way to get your toddler ready for this transition is by introducing books and stories about not only toilet training specifically, but also wee, poo, and the toilet/ potty itself. I've put together five of my favourite, so prepare yourself for a lot of "wee and poo talk", and let's dive in!

Who's who in Bookieboo - 20 Random Questions

Who's who in Bookieboo - 20 Random Questions

Time to get to know me, folks! My name is Karly and I am the sole owner and operator of Bookieboo. I started this little passion project up in May 2017 and am so proud of how it has grown and developed over the last couple years.

Although I add the Parent Guide and #beyondthebook activities to the blog each month, I'd like to start adding other posts - like tips and tricks about reading/ raising readers/ interviews with authors, great reading list suggestions etc. SO to start, I thought I'd do a little Q&A of random questions so you can get to know me a little better!

What’s your Favourite Book? Hmmm tough one for a book business owner (although I read a lot more children's books nowadays to be honest..) - I'd say A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. I read this book for book club quite a few years ago and just loved it. I honestly think everyone should experience this book.

What’s your favourite ice cream flavour? I love the Chocolate Fudge Brownie by Ben & Jerry's - it's magic.

What’s your most embarrassing childhood memory? Eek, almost too many to choose from! When I was in year 7 I got stuck in a recycling skip bin... I was taking the bin out for a teacher, and after dumping out all the contents into the skip, accidentally dropped the bin in. I thought it was a good idea to climb in and retrieve it, but of course couldn't get back out. This was before every one had mobile phones, and so I had to sit in the bin and wait until someone walked by that could help me get out. I ended up getting in trouble from the teacher as she thought I was skipping class!

What are your 3 Favourite Movies?

1. Bridesmaids - do I really need to explain this one? It's the perfect comedy.
2. The Emperor's New Groove (yes, I know it's a children's movie - keep your judgements to yourself, haha)
3. Pride & Prejudice (the one with Kiera Knightly). This is the *ultimate* rainy day / sad day movie. I could watch it again and again and never get sick of it. Hot tip - if you have P&P on dvd, watch the US Alternate Ending... sooooo good, swoon.

What’s the most beautiful place you’ve ever been? Capri, Italy - my (now) husband and I went to Italy for 3 weeks in 2013 and would absolutely love to go back again!

What accomplishment are you most proud of? It's a tie between completing my Honours Degree in Psychology and giving birth to my son, Ellis. I know that probably shouldn't be a tie (according to society or what not) BUT it only took me 9 months to grow the baby, it took me 7 YEARS to finish my degree!

Who would you like to live like for a day? Martha Stewart. Did you know she has an entire room in her house dedicated to floral arrangement?

If you could ask your pet 3 questions, what would they be?
1. Why do you always want to bite my toes? (to Winston, the cat)
2. What are you looking for when you dig all those holes in the yard? (to Lola, the dog)
3. Who is your favourite - me or Dad?

When you’re having a bad day, what do you do to make yourself feel better? Take a long, hot shower. Make a crappy instant coffee. Watch Pride & Prejudice (see above).

Using one word, how would you describe your family? Cah-ray-zee

Who is the kindest person you know? Probably my mum. She will go to the ends of the earth for her kids.

What is the scariest movie you’ve ever seen? I don't really watch scary movies, but I started watching one recently called Cargo that was a 'post-apocalyptic horror' that was about this epidemic where you turn into a zombie thing. I had to turn it off, haha. #tooreal

Who’s your celebrity crush? Daniel Radcliffe. Now and forever.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be? I'd love to go to New Zealand - great thing is, this is a super attainable goal coming from Australia.

If you could shop for free at one store, which would you choose? Hmmm I almost want to say Kmart but it would depend on how long the free period went for. Is this an ongoing free shop, or is it shopping for an hour or something? If it was a quick free shop for an hour, I'd choose a really expensive designer store, sell all the merchandise, and then spend my earnings at Kmart.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? Lots of different things, but the one that sticks out is a dolphin trainer/ marine biologist. Did every 90s kid want to be a dolphin trainer? Why was this a thing? Is this still a thing?

What’s your favourite day of the week? Saturday, specifically Saturday morning - it has so much potential, without the pre-work saddies that comes along with Sunday.

Who would play you in a movie about your life? Anna Kendrick for sure.

What’s the one food you could never bring yourself to eat? Peanut butter, unless it's mixed with some kind of chocolate. I assumed this question was talking about norma people food, not some kind of bug or something.

What’s your pet peeve? Poor grammar. Although I'm sure I've made some grammatical errors in this post, I really get bugged by it. I've stopped correcting people on it in real life though, because only jerks do that.

That's it! Hope you enjoyed getting to know me a little bit more! :)
xx Karly
